Environment

The Environmental Policy and Planning Division (EPPD) of the Ministry has main responsibility for guiding and formulating environmental policy in keeping with Government’s Policy Framework for Sustainable Development and the National Environmental Policy; in addition to monitoring and evaluating the implementation and effectiveness of environmental policy; design and implementation of environmental programmes and projects pursuant to national policy objectives; pollution control; and, hazardous waste and substance management.

This division is strategic to the Government’s mandate to prudently manage the environment in light of emerging trends with respect to disaster preparedness and management.

Facilitation of Sound Environmental Management

  1. Assist in the formulation of environmental policy, through relevant research;
  2. Monitor and evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of environmental policy;
  3. Promote and facilitate the harmonization of social and economic policies with national environmental policy objectives;
  4. Design and implement programmes and projects pursuant to national environmental policy objectives;
  5. Conduct research to inform the formulation of environmental policy;
  6. Facilitate Government’s efforts to promote sustainable development;
  7. Coordinate the implementation of Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) to which the Ministry is the National Focal Point;
  8. Work in close collaboration with the Environmental Management Authority and other environmental stakeholders in policy implementation;
  9. Assist in the identification and mobilization of financial and technical assistance to support Government’s efforts to promote sustainable development;
  10. Represent the Ministry on technical committees.

The agencies with responsibility for implementing the Ministry’s environmental mandate are namely: The Environmental Management Authority (EMA), The Chaguaramas Development Authority (CDA) and The Community-Based Environmental Protection & Enhancement Programme Company Limited (CEPEP).
